If a debt collector is contacting you about a debt that you currently owe, try to work with them cordially to try to resolve the matter- you may even be able to ask to reduce the fees owed. If you feel as if the debt collector is contacting you by mistake or is using unlawful tactics, you can tell the debt collector to stop contacting you- best if done in writing.
How Do you Write a Letter
Before sending your letter, make sure that you make a copy for your records and send the original letter by certified mail and pay for a return receipt so that you know when the document is received by the collector. Once that debt collector has gotten your letter they cannot contact you again with the exception of two thing- they are done with dealing with you and are letting you know that they will no longer contact you or if the creditor is taking further action. They can sue you to collect the debt owed.
