Beware of Fake Debt Collectors

April 2nd, 2015 by admin

It is truly sad that there are people out there that will prey on the financially weak, unfortunate, and disadvantaged. Unfortunately, there are scammers that use whatever means possible to cheat and lie for money.

There have been reports of “fake” debt collectors reaching out to consumers in various ways in order to elicit money from them. They are posing as police offers, lawyers, bankers and even just plain ole debt collection representatives. It is difficult for the average consumer to spot and sniff out these culprits and their scams.

We urge that whenever you receive a call from someone claiming that you owe debt, that you are unaware of, be sure to get their name, the name of the company and their address. You can then inform them that you will be looking up the company and calling in directly to handle and inquire about the debt. This will bypass the scam.

Facts about Debt Collection Contact

You should know your rights when dealing with debt collectors, this will also help you to determine whether a con-artist is on the other line.

A debt collector cannot call multiple times to cause an annoyance, this is considered harassment. They also cannot call you at work, or at inappropriate hours (they may only call between 8am and 9pm).

A debt collector must send a letter within 5 days of contacting you to inform you of the debt owed. The letter will also give more information on that debt and how to dispute if relevant.

You can stop debt collection calls by getting a debt collection lawyer on your side. The debt collection agency will then have to go through your lawyer for all communication.

A debt collector cannot harass, abuse or threaten arrest.

If you feel as if you are being harassed by a debt collector or if you have been scammed, contact the lawyers at Credit Report Problems immediately.
