Credit errors can get you fired

You already know that you can lose a job because of errors on a background check, but errors on a credit report can also affect your employment. Background checks can often include your credit score; employers like to see what kind of financial risk their employees have. What’s good to keep in mind is that your credit report will not show your employment status, however a mistake on your credit report can keep you from being hired. If an employer sees that you have bad credit, or a mistake makes it look like you have bad credit, that can have an effect on the hiring process.

You can deny employers from seeing your credit score. Before they can see it, you need to fill out a release. Credit reporting agencies will remove information about you that employers are not allowed to consider in the hiring process, like age and marital status, but credit scores will remain on the report. Other things such as bankruptcies, mortgages and loans, and delinquencies will also appear. If you’re in the job market or being considered for a promotion, you should review a copy of your credit report so you know exactly what’s on there before your employer sees it.

Know Your Rights

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you have the right to access your credit report and dispute errors that may appear. Once you report a mistake to the agency that supplied your report, the agency then has 30 days to investigate and remove the error if they cannot verify that it is correct.
